Definition of Meter
The metre (American spelling: meter, symbol: m) is the
basic unit of distance (or of "length", in the parlance of the physical
sciences) in the International System of Units. It is defined as the length of
the path travelled by light in an absolute vacuum during a time interval of
exactly 1/299,792,458 of a second. This definition does not change the size of
the unit, but it was introduced to take into account recent developments in
measurement techniques whereby length and time can be reproduced with very high
accuracy — in the case of time, to an accuracy of 1013.
